The Spanish electric vehicle market is facing serious challenges: the abolition of subsidies under the Plan MOVES III program could lead to a sharp decline in sales.

This program offered up to 7,000 euros for the purchase of electric cars and hybrids, and up to 9,000 euros for commercial vehicles. Subsidies also covered up to 80% of the costs of installing charging stations.

In 2024, the share of electric cars in total car sales in Spain was only 5.6%, significantly below the European average of 13.6%. After the abolition of the program, a further decline in sales is expected, especially from February 2025, which will have a negative impact on the car market next year.

Many experts point out that the Spanish situation is similar to the German experience. After the end of subsidies in Germany in 2023, sales of electric cars fell by 27.4%.

Automotive industry officials are expressing concerns about a slowdown in the adoption of new technologies and meeting environmental targets, making the outlook for electric vehicles in Spain uncertain.
